There is an urgent need for animal scientists to be proactive in developing sound agricultural policies and legislation if we are to optimize societal benefits through support to the global animal agriculture industry. Innovation and new technologies will play a key role. Today more than ever before, animal science should be proactively communicated to policymakers by scientists. Effective communication of animal science to policymakers requires:
a dedicated commitment to implement a strategic program resulting in the development, implementation, and communication of sound agricultural policy;
scientists trained to communicate with policymakers,,regulators and legislators;
alignment with the appropriate stakeholders;
a communications plan to align with the advocacy strategy, using many tools including social media; and
serious investment in training future animal science leaders to be effective communicators, including graduate students and postdoctoral students.
Animal science research, extension, and education will meet the global challenges predicted for population growth to 2050. However, science is not enough to meet these challenges. Sound agricultural and livestock policy and legislation are critical as well. Communicating animal science in the development of policy that will shape the future of modern agriculture is a calling that must be met by the animal science community.
